Copper Beech

lotherton hall 12/10/22

Note by June Hinchliffe

This may interest you, it's a photo I took on the 12th of October 2022 of the large copper beech tree situated at the south side of the Hall, said to be 180 years old, surrounded by security fencing. It was felled on the 19th of October 2022 due to it suffering from decay, fungi on its roots known as Meripilus giganteus, giant polypore.

I should really have nipped down from the archive room & asked the tree surgeons for a small log from a branch & then had it sliced up & we could all have had a couple of coasters each, kicking myself now that I wasn't brave enough!

I was going to take another photo from the same spot but when i was last out there on the 13th November it was thick with fog!
